    Dependability Issues in Open Source Software - DIRC Project Activity 5 Final Report

    This report presents the findings of this investigation by reporting on the main activities that have been undertaken and presenting our informed final recommendation on a follow-on project activity. It is structured in the following way. Section 2 explains the obstacles encountered while trying to understand the term "open source", contacts pursued and projects observed with respect to open source. Section 3 presents insights into the sociology of open source software development, whereas section 4 describes observations drawn and main issues identified for open source software development and dependable systems engineering. Finally, section 5 explains our recommendation together with the reasons behind our decision. Further insights on the activities described in this report, as well as various papers that have been written in relation to this activity can be found in the appendices A - E

    Terrestrial record of cyclic early Eocene warm-humid events in clay mineral assemblages from the Salta basin, northwestern Argentina

    The Eocene continental sequence investigated in this study belongs to the Salta Group; it was deposited in an intracontinental rift, the Salta Basin (NW Argentina) that evolved from the Lower Cretaceous to middle Paleogene. The Salta Group contains the Maíz Gordo and Lumbrera Fms, spans the Paleocene-early Eocene, and shows excellent exposures in the region of the Valles Calchaquíes. This research is focused on the continental facies of the Lumbrera Fm, which correspond to the early Eocene. We studied the mineralogy of the fine-grained beds of the Lumbrera Fm in five locations (Valle Encantado, Tonco, Tin Tin, Luracatao, and Obelisco) by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy in order to examine the vertical variations in clay mineralogy and their relations with global paleoclimatic changes registered during the Eocene. The microtexture of the authigenic smectite-type clays (Sm to I/Sm R0) suggests that they mainly originated by crystallization from glassy volcanic materials. The high reactivity of the glass precludes the use of smectite-type-clay formation as an indicator of specific paleoclimatic conditions in the studied sediments. In contrast, the formation of kaolinite in sections with very low smectite proportions and a strong degree of weathering in crystalline silicates reflects intense weathering conditions and is a useful paleoclimatic proxy in terrestrial sediments. Significant variations in kaolinite/muscovite ratios at the base and in an intermediate bed in the Lumbrera Fm at Valle Encantado suggest the presence of cyclic hyperthermals through the Ypresian stage that may be tentatively correlated with the Eocene Thermal Maxima 2 and 3, which are the largest events that have been identified at a global scale in early Eocene marine sediments.Fil: Do Campo, Margarita Diana.     Next-Generation EU DataGrid Data Management Services

    We describe the architecture and initial implementation of the next-generation of Grid Data Management Middleware in the EU DataGrid (EDG) project. The new architecture stems out of our experience and the users requirements gathered during the two years of running our initial set of Grid Data Management Services. All of our new services are based on the Web Service technology paradigm, very much in line with the emerging Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA). We have modularized our components and invested a great amount of effort towards a secure, extensible and robust service, starting from the design but also using a streamlined build and testing framework. Our service components are: Replica Location Service, Replica Metadata Service, Replica Optimization Service, Replica Subscription and high-level replica management.     Mineralogy, structural control and age of the Incachule Sb epithermal veins, the Cerro Aguas Calientes collapse caldera, Central Puna

    The Incachule Sb epithermal veins is located near to the N-E rim of the Cerro Aguas Calientes collapse caldera (17.5-10.8 Ma), in the geologic province of Puna, Salta- Argentina. It is hosted in Miocene felsic volcanic rocks with continental arc signature. The district includes twelve vein systems with mineralization of Sb occurring in hydrothermal breccias and stockwork. The veins are composed of quartz-sulfide with pyrite, stibnite and arsenopyrite. All around the veins, wall rocks are variably altered to clay minerals and sulfates in an area of around 2.5 km wide by more than 7 km long. The hydrothermal alterations recognized are: silicic, phyllic and argillic.The veins are characterized by high contents of Sb, As, and Tl and intermediate contents of Pb-Zn-Cu, and traces of Ag and Au. Homogenization and ice-melting temperatures of fluid inclusions vary from 125 °C to 189 °C and -2.4 °C to -0.8 °C. The isotopic data indicated a range of δ34S -3.04‰ to +0.72‰ consistent with a magmatic source for sulfur.We present the firsts K-Ar ages for hydrothermal illite/smectite mixed layers (I/SR1, 60% illite layers) and illite that constrain the age of the ore deposit (8.5-6.7 ± 0.2 Ma).The data shown here, let characterized the Incachule district as a shallow low sulfidation epithermal system hosted in a collapse caldera. Our data also indicate that mineralization is structurally controlled by a fault system related to the 10.3 Ma collapse of Aguas Calientes caldera.     Replica management in the european datagrid project

These services, based on the web services model, enable movement and replication of data at high speed from one geographical site to another, management of distributed replicated data, optimization of access to data, and the provision of a metadata management tool.
